Happy New Year! And a Good-Bye for Now.

I cannot quite believe its 2018 already, somehow I feel stuck in 2014.

That also means that the term is almost over – and with it this blog.
Throughout the last three month, I spent almost every week with some aspect of Hydro-Politics in Africa. Yet, if I now know one thing – it’s that there is so much more! Yes, that´s quite cliché and still. I feel like I indeed got a much deeper and most importantly more comprehensive insight into various water-relevant spheres. My regional focus around the Lake Chad region came to the prize of many other interesting issues left out (it still itches me to zoom into South Africa, the booming state of Tanzania or Namibia – where I spent some time before). Yet my focus also enabled me to tangle along that particular case. Four extensive posts talked about Nigeria which I felt more than confident to do. In order to approach Nigeria’s hydro-political arena somewhat holistically, I felt you (and me, surely) would benefit much more from such an inter-blogpost in-depth analysis of current challenges in the country. Of course, there is so much more. But, as I know now, that is the inherent sacrifice when writing a diverting yet informative blog.

I am curious to follow Nigeria’s development in the future. Both the cross-boundary Lake Chad situation and the domestic pollution-corruption-water stress complex have the potential to develop into two much bigger humanitarian crisis than they already are. Possibly increasing commercialisation of Nigeria's water sources and infrastructure will increase incentives to reduce pollution – to the price of reduced democratic scope. Here, community-managed schemes would pose an alternative. However, as we discovered, in a 185m people state, well maintained and sufficient large-scale infrastructure is required nonetheless.

So much on this blog for now - the more I read about hydro-politics, the closer I move to becoming a water-blogger in the future. Maybe.  Anyhow - why don't have a look at what's happening around here in the future? Bye!
